Read on to find out more about Niacinamide, Vitamin C and how they work together to help strengthen your skin.

What is Niacinamide?

Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of vitamin B3, which is an essential nutrient. Vitamins from this group are particularly famous for their soothing and healing properties and there is much more to this nutrient when it comes to general skin health.

What does Niacinamide do for your skin?

Niacinamide works with the natural substances in your skin to help with a variety of skin issues. It can also reduce the impact of environmental damage because of its ability to improve the skin's barrier as well as aiding your skin in creating more hyaluronic acid and collagen.

Dry Skin

Serums that include Niacinamide are great for those who suffer from dry skin and want to give it a hydration boost. Niacinamide helps renew and restore the surface of the skin against moisture loss and dehydration by helping skin improve its natural production of skin-strengthening ceramides. It can also help with the redness and sensitivity of the skin for those who suffer from rosacea.

Pores

Using Niacinamide serums also helps to minimise the appearance of enlarged pores.

Acne

Niacinamide has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used to reduce the development of acne lesions. It also reduces excess sebum production which is one of the main causes of acne.

In addition to the aforementioned benefits, Niacinamide also improves uneven skin tone, softens fine lines and wrinkles, diminishes dullness, and reduces signs of ageing.

Niacinamide is also generally well-tolerated and considered a mild ingredient, meaning that it can be used by people who have more sensitive skin.

Is Niacinamide better than Vitamin C?

Both vitamins offer similar benefits so they can be considered as equal. It depends on your skin's needs. For example, if you want to achieve brighter skin then Vitamin C is your answer but if you want to tackle your acne then Niacinamide is a better solution.

Is Niacinamide the same as Niacin?

Niacinamide is not the same as niacin. They are two different forms of vitamin B3. Niacinamide is also known as Nicotinamide.

What is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant with a multitude of benefits. It boosts collagen production which is what helps to keep your skin firm, it can fight free radicals and it has the ability to fade dark spots and brighten your complexion.

What does Vitamin C do for your skin?

Vitamin C protects your skin from UV exposure, inhibits melanin production in the skin, which helps to lighten hyperpigmentation and brown spots. Vitamin C also brightens your skin and reduces wrinkles.

Can skin absorb Vitamin C?

Vitamin C absorption is mostly dependent on its pH level. If you have normal skin, look for a Vitamin C serum one with a low pH of approximately 3.5 for optimal absorption. Those with sensitive skin should look for a formula with a pH of 5 to 6.

Studies have shown that maximal absorption is achieved with a 20% Vitamin C solution, with higher concentrations showing lower absorption.

Is Vitamin C good for skin pigmentation?

Yes, Vitamin C helps to smooth uneven tones and helps to prevent hyperpigmentation.

How do Niacinamide and Vitamin C work together?

Niacinamide and Vitamin C together make an especially powerful combination for putting skin problems to rest. Together, these ingredients can recharge and revamp the texture of your skin, boost collagen, shrink the size of your pores and leave your face boosting with radiance.

When used together, Niacinamide and Vitamin C are highly effective in brightening the skin and providing double the efforts to help in reducing the signs of aging and hyperpigmentation of the skin.

Do Niacinamide and Vitamin C create Nicotinic Acid?

Many people believe that Niacinamide and Vitamin C are not good together and that they will do more harm than good. However, this information comes from old research conducted back in the 1960's. Recent research states that Niacinamide is a very stable ingredient and is not affected by pH or heat.

It is thought that the combination of Niacinamide and Vitamin C will produce an undesirable byproduct called nicotinic acid. However this will only occur if the two ingredients are heated to an extremely high temperature for a considerable amount of time. It will also only occur if a pure version of vitamin C is used.

Realistically, you cannot achieve such high temperatures at home so there is very little risk here and Niacinamide in itself is an extremely tough ingredient so environmental factors won't have as much of an impact on it.
